Tips for deciding which B-School Application forms to fill

which MBA Colleges Application forms to fill
Deciding on to which B-School's form to fill is an important decision as this could make or break your MBA dreams. Below are some of the recommended tips along with examples which could help in decision making:

1. Based on expected Percentile Range
It is advisable to fill up the forms of the colleges abover and below your expected percentile.
Example: Based on your analysis if you are expecting a percentile of 95. Then you must fill forms of following colleges:
-MDI
-IMT
-BIM
-NIM
-IMI
=> Suggestion here is to fill up the forms of range of B-Schools, both above and below your expected/anticipated CAT percentile.

2. Based on Profile & Sectional Cutoff
In addition to this if candidate is aware that he can easily manage to clear sectional cut-off in CAT(based on Mock Test results) and he has 1+ years work experience and has a good percentage in academics, then they could filter the above list further.
Example: A candidate with 3 years of work exp. and good percentage in 10th, 12th and graduation(80+) is more likely to get calls from a high ranked college.
=> So Suggestion here is to analyze your chances based on all aspects such as your performance in each section of CAT, your academics, work ex. etc.

3. Based on College Specific Criteria's
Certain colleges such as IIM-B, SP Jain gives calls to candidates even with lower percentile but with very good profile. Be carefull in filling up forms or expecting a call from such colleges  if your profile is not having :
- A very good academics
- Relevant and solid Work experience
- Any significant achievement
Example: A candidate with 90 percentile could get a call from SP Jain if he has 3 years of work experience and has 85+ percent marks throughout in academics. Whereas a candidate with 93+ percentile with no work exp. and around 75 percent of marks throughout his acads may not get a call from IIM-B.
= > So the suggestion here is to analyze the selection criteria of the MBA college you are applying for.

4. IIM Dreams
Even if you score 99+ in CAT but if you have average academics then its very likely that you would not get calls from Top IIMs scuh as IIM-A, IIM-B, IIM-C, IIM-L etc.
Example: A candidate with 99.5 percentile and 71% in 10th (CBSE) , 61% in 12th (CBSE) and 72% in Graduation (B.Tech)  may not get calls from any of the top 5 IIMs. Furthermore this doesn't mean that he would get calls from rest all IIMs, from lowers IIMs also he may or may not get calls depending on the academic marsk cutoffs set by particular IIM.
This is because most of the IIMs consider academics marks as one of the criteria along with CAT score for shortlisting candidates for interview.
=> So the suggestion here is to analyze yourself based on your profile and not to have false expectations for IIM calls if your past academics marks are low.

Assuming around 90 percentile along with reservation you could expect calls from colleges ranked between 13-25:

    1. Dear Anonymous,

Full time work exp. as Bank PO would be considered as valid work exp. at least during getting calls from colleges. Beyond which during interviews you need to justify it properly how the exp. is going to help you during your MBA and what all have you gained from your Job. The quality of this exp. is not considered as high as experience from real corporate world.

  13. I have two questions..
the 1st one: the CAT exam has 4 sections(i.e. Q.A,D.I,V.A,L.R).Out of total 60(30+30)questions,what's the % of each section?
the 2nd one: what's "sectional cutoff"?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Dear Anonymous,

There ARE two separately timed sections in the test. The sections are (a) Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (b) Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning.
There is no separate percentage for each of the above 2 sections. Its percentile which is calculated based on your score. For each of the 2 sections your percentile would be determined based on your score. Total percentile is calculated based on your total score (sum of both the sections)

Below are some details about percentile:
Percentile is relative marking indicating how you have performed when compared to others and it cannot be pre-defined based on numbers of questions you are going to attempt and it will depend on:
-Level & complexity of questions asked in particular year
-Ability of other candidates to perform better than you.
Say for instance, in a particular year out of 180 marks with scoring just 75 marks a person could get 75+ percentile if the CAT question paper is tough at the same time in case of simpler paper a person may not get even 75 percentile after scoring 120 marks out of 180.
If you have scored 80 marks out of 180 in CAT and no one has performed better than you that is marks of all other candidates who wrote CAT through out India is less than 80 then your percentile score would be 100.
Sectional cutoff would be cutoff in the two sections mentioned above or threshold percentile which a college sets as its criteria for giving calls to candidates.

      Hope this clarifies.

      All the best!

  14. Dear DRKJ,

You have excellent academic marks. CAT Score and Academics marks are two different screening criteria bases on which IIMs give calls to students and both have different weight age. One needs to clear the cut off for both CAT score as well as academics marks set by IIMs. In your case you could easily manage to clear academic marks cutoff for most of the IIMs and you should focus on score high percentile in CAT. Generally top IIMs gives call at 99+ percentile in CAT with consistent scores across sections.

I am not very sure of any quota for J&K Migrants. With work experience & 85 percentile you can expects calls from colleges giving calls on 90 percentile to non experienced candidates. You could refer below post to find out colleges where you can expect call on 85-90 percentile:

    1. Dear Anonymous,

If you have school/college level certificates as achievements then that might be valued much by IIMs, though its good to have. If you just score 90+ in CAT, assuming it is less than 95 then unfortunately you may not get call from any of the top 10 colleges.

I've achieved 82.2% in both 10th & 12th and 81.2% in my under graad ( BE ), which I completed in June 2012. No work ex till August(which was asked in the registration form) .

With a CAT score of 94 Percentile - 97 Percentile , do i stand a chance of geting calls from the top 5 IIM'S?

Also do you know how much marks would result in an 80+ percentile section wise?

    1. Dear Anonymous,

To get calls from top 5 IIMs you should score 99+ in CAT. Its very difficult to predict the score which will fetch 80+ percentile as there are lot of unpredictable factors involved.

    1. Hi Prashant,

With online CAT its very difficult to predict anyone's percentile until the results are out. Per my understanding and analysis, chance of getting IIM calls is less, your percentile may be close to 91-94.
If your percentile is between 93-98 then you should expect calls from colleges ranked between 13-25 in below list:

Chances of getting IIM Calls is very very less due to very average academics. Try to score 99+ in CAT so that you could get to a good private school. Focus on getting calls from college ranked between 15-30 in below link.

I will not say these are best colleges but will call them as decent option for MBA and you must do well in studies after joining these colleges to get placement. Also good and bad are relative terms based on your priorities.

    1. Dear Maddy,

As per the admission criteria of B-Schools you are expected to complete your graduation at the time of admission in B-School (i.e. towards the mid of academic year).
If you can get your main degree before the admission deadline for the particular colleges then you should not face any problems.

    1. Dear Maddy,

As far as I know you need to submit all your documents in the same year you take admission. If you are taking admission in July-Aug 2013 and by then if you have all your backlogs cleared then you would be allowed to take admissions in MBA college of your choice.

  37. hi sir,

    This is Ram.I have 2 q's
    1)First question :
my 10th marks :90.5% (state board of Andhrapradesh)
    intermediate(+2)marks :94.8%
graduation : 8.22/10 (CGPA,Electronics and communication engineering in pondicherry university)
Have notable achievements in academics and also in extra circular activities.Attempted cat-2012 with very less preparation so can not guess a good result this year so aiming for cat-2013.
can u please suggest me,the cat score i need with my profile to get into top 20 mba colleges in India.

    2)Second Question:
while filling cat application we had an option of choosing iim's and courses.....does it mean that there is no need of applying for iim's admissions seperately????....and do we need to apply each and every non iim college seperately for admission through online?...if so...how can we apply for specific colleges without knowing our cat result...becuase it will be a waste of money and effort if we doesn't get a guessed score.
    expecting ur reply

    Thanks in advance
