Tips for Cracking XAT - All About XAT Format, Duration & Cutoffs

Overview
XAT 2017 will be on the similar pattern like last few years. It will be conducted in a pen & paper format and will have 3 sections + GK + Essay Writing. The marks of General Knowledge will not be used for determining the percentile and cut off at first stage of selection. However it is used by XLRI and some other Associate Member Institutes at the time of final selection. Candidates are also required to write an essay on a given topic. XAT is a multiple choice test of 210 minutes duration divided into below sections:
Part -I
-Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning
-Decision Making and
-Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation
Part - II
-General Knowledge and
-Essay Writing

XAT Exam Date : 8th January 2017

Important tips for cracking XAT
    • Do not leave lot of questions unattended as it can result in negative marking. In XAT 2016 there was negative marking of 0.05 marks if number of unattended questions by a candidate were more than 13.
    • Each question will have 5 options which means probability of randomly choosing a wrong answer is 0.8 which is 0.05 higher when compared to exams having questions with 4 option.
    • 1/4th Mark is deducted if you answer a question incorrectly
    • Unlike CAT, XAT is based on pen and paper format - this means you will have flexibility to switch from one section to the other. Get yourself familiar with using OMR sheets!
    • You should start with section you are more comfortable and confident with
    • Do not attempt a section in which you are least confident for the end, attempt it in middle
    • Never start attempting a comprehension or Logical Reasoning question(with lots of inputs) in Last 5 minutes. In last 5 mins, try to attempt questions which are short in description.
    • Do smart selection of questions - there is no point in correctly attempting a complex question by spending 12 mins whereas in the same time you could have had attempted 4 simple questions.
    • Have sectional cutoffs in mind - its advisable that while attempting a section avoid getting over enthusiastic and spend too much of time in one section alone
    • While attempting Part II quickly attempt General Knowledge questions to ensure you have ample time for essay writing.
    • Carry black or blue ball point pens only for filling OMR sheets - do not use gel or ink pens
    • Attempt past year question papers to make yourself familiar with type of questions asked

      XAT 2016 Analysis:
      • 170 minutes were allotted to answer for 3 sections of Part I and it carried 78 questions.
      • Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning = 26 Questions, Decision Making = 23 questions and Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation = 29 Questions
      • 35 Minutes were allotted for GK(35 questions) and essay writing
Each question is followed by 5 options and there is a negative marking.
The test is followed by an Essay-writing exercise of 20 minutes duration.

      Number of Questions in XAT:
The number of questions asked in XAT first 3 sections varies each year, over last few year it has been observed that number of questions has gone down.
In 2016 there were just 78 questions, looking at the trend chances are that in 2017 number of question will go up slightly.
      XAT 2008 had 120 questions
      XAT 2009 had 104 questions
      XAT 2010 had 101 questions
      XAT 2011 had 101 questions
      XAT 2012 had 85 questions
      XAT 2013 had 121 questions
      XAT 2014 had 103 questions
      XAT 2015 had 84 questions
      XAT 2016 had 78 questions

      Marking Scheme:
      • In XAT 2016, each question carried equal marks and 1/4th Mark was deducted for each wrong answer.
      • Also leaving a question unattended could result in deduction of 0.05 marks. Though the deduction would not be applicable to a maximum of 13 questions
Though not mentioned explicitly, it was assumed that each question carried 1 mark in XAT 2008, 2009 and 2010. There was progressive negative marking for incorrect answers. In XAT 2008 and XAT 2009, 0.25 marks were deducted for the first 6 incorrect answers in each section and 0.50 marks for every incorrect answer thereafter. In XAT 2010, 0.20 marks were deducted for the first 5 incorrect answers in each section and 0.25 marks for every incorrect answer thereafter. So XAT had relaxed the criteria for negative marking considerably in 2010. XAT 2011 was much more challenging than the previous years’ papers. XAT introduced the pattern of differential marking this year. There were questions with marks ranging from 1 to 5. There were 101 questions in the paper worth 253 marks. The penalty for incorrect answers was 25% of the marks allotted to the question.

XAT Question Type & difficulty Level
The design of XAT questions is different from other B-School entrance tests and the difficulty level of test was very high till 2011. In addition to XAT performance, other factors like academic ability and work experience may also be considered while shortlisting candidates for the second stage.

      Section-wise details of XAT:
      Analytical Reasoning & Decision Making:
The section mainly comprises arrangement problems and decision-making cases. The decision-making cases present real life situations where a candidate is expected to make rational choices keeping in mind the socially acceptable norms. One should go through the previous years’ XAT papers and a few ethical dilemma cases on the internet to prepare for the DM questions.

      Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning:
The section mainly comprises Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, Parajumbles and Fill-in-the-Blanks. There are hardly any questions based on Pure Grammar and Vocabulary.

      Data Interpretation & Quantitative Ability:
There are 3-4 DI sets in the section comprising 10-12 DI questions. QA questions are spread across different topics like Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Modern Maths. Most of the questions require a good command over the topic. The questions are generally very wordy and one needs to devote some time to pick and choose the easier questions.

      Essay writing:
At the end of the objective test, an essay on the given topic is to be written in 20 minutes. Though the essays are not used for shortlisting candidates for the second stage, candidates may be asked questions regarding their essays during their interview. One should try to be concise, precise and logical while writing. Slangs, abbreviations and sms language should definitely be avoided. Read
