Before jump starting your CAT preparation you must analyze, understand and plan the preparation in such a way that it enables you to sail through all the hurdles. Below post is recommended to all aspirants who are looking forward to crack CAT in coming years.
Step-2 Do Self Analysis for CAT (For next 7 days)
The next thing which you should do is analyze yourself so as to find your strength & weaknesses(Spend 2 hours per day). How to find your strength & weaknesses
1.Simply pick up a past years CAT exam papers. (Attempt Free Online Mock Tests or Download Past Year Papers for MBA Exams.)
2. Attempt as many questions as you can without putting the time limit in one go (say you sit for 4 hours read all the questions & attempt which ever you are confident of.....don't make any blind guess for any of the questions.....feel free to make calculated guess in verbal section :) ).
-->
Step-3 Execution: Mastering your strengths & improving on your Weaknesses
Step-4 Work on Personality Development
We also recommend you to focus on spoken English, please form a group within your friend circle and have mock Extempore/ GDs/ Interviews/ Debates. This will not only help you in your MBA preparation but also for job interviews & will surely help in your overall personality development.
I hope you should be able to organize such a session for half an hour everyday within your college campus or hostel.
Step-5 Set your Goals
So please do your graduation with the same zeal with which you are aspiring for MBA.

The number of hours a candidate needs to put in for CAT or other MBA exam preparation depends on their current level of expertise across following sections:
-Quantitative Aptitude
-Verbal Ability
-Logical Reasoning
-Data Interpretation
A person who is very good in mathematics and has good verbal ability would surely need to spend lesser time in preparation when compared to a person who is not good in math’s and verbal. Below are the recommended guidelines to anyone who is planning to start preparing for MBA exams like CAT.
Step-1 Learn all about CAT (First 2-3 days)
Devote few hours daily for next few days and try to know as much as possible about CAT covering eligibility criteria, exam format, kind of questions etc. This is important so that you are very clear on different attributes of CAT and there is no confusion in your mind.

3. Check your answers and attempts.
4. Write down your overall score, along with sectional score
5. Repeat step 1-4 for 4 more Past Year CAT Papers
With your consolidated scores for 4-5 attempts of different Mock CAT tests, you would be able find which section is your strength and which one is your weakness.
Refer below links for past paper and free online tests:
Please Remember: Initially when you write any mock tests with same time limit as actual CAT, your scores would be quite low as you are yet to master the time
management. So don't panic, slowly with time & with your preparation in progress your score will rise progressively.

Step-3 Execution: Mastering your strengths & improving on your Weaknesses
Once you have finished analyzing yourself, you need to start working on weaknesses & mastering your strengths. There are difference ways to improve your weaknesses and master your strengths:
1. Stick to Self Preparation + Mock Tests : If you are confident about your abilities based the analysis done in step -2, you can continue with self preparation without joining any coaching. Even for self preparation you must have good collection of study materials and books. Refer below links for recommended books:

2. Join a Good Coaching along with Mock Tests: If you are not confident enough after the self analysis, you should consider joining a good coaching institute to improve on your weak area's.
Which coaching institute you should join?
ByJu, TIME, Career Launcher, IMS , PT Education are some of the popular coaching institutes for CAT. Rather than just focusing on the brand names of coaching institutes you must consider below factors before joining a coaching:
a. Based on your Weaknesses -Some of the coaching institutes have certain area's as their strengths and they might be providing the best coaching in a particular section. You must know what is your weakness and whether the particular coaching institute is known to be the best for that particular section or not. To find out this you can sync up with the current ongoing batches or students who have taken coaching from the particular branch.
Example: Raj is very good in Quantitative Aptitude and Logical Reasoning but he is not at all confident in Verbal Ability. He joined ABC coaching institute in his city without analyzing whether their Verbal Analysis coaching is very good or not. ABC institute coaching for Quantitative Aptitude and Logical Reasoning are very good but Verbal Analysis coaching is mediocre.
Due to this Raj ended up wasting lot of time and money as he made a wrong choice.
b. Proximity to your Residence -If the coaching institute is too far from your residence then you may end wasting too much of time in commuting to and fro. Even though the coaching might be good but wasting more than 2 hours in commuting to and fro is not recommend.

c. Feedback of the particular center - Even if a coaching institute name is very famous throughout the country, still there is no guarantee that a particular branch would also be good. What matters for you is the feedback of the local branch which you are planning to join and faculty member's reputation as an expert in coaching. A local coaching center which is dis-organized, non-punctual and lacks in god faculty may become an extra burden for you. You must seek the feedback about coaching and its faculty members from current ongoing batch students before joining a particular coaching center.
You should start with self preparation and stick to it for *few weeks. Join for Mock CATs after few weeks of self preparation. Based on your performance in Mock tests and your self- preparation, you must decide if you really require joining for classroom coaching or not.
There are plenty of tips, tricks & shortcuts shared across this site, just browse and download whatever you feel would be useful for you. Also there are lot of free ebooks, past papers and study material for MBA preparation.

*Note: The duration of *few months mentioned above varies from candidate to candidate. A student who is in 1st year engineering has lot more time for preparation than some on who is in final year. Few months for 1st year student could be 9-12 months whereas it could be just 1.5-2 months for someone who is in final year.

Step-5 Set your Goals
After spending considerable time in preparation it would also be advisable for you to set a clear cut target about your aspirations, whether your are planning to take admission only in top 10 colleges or top 20 colleges or top 30 colleges. The target must be realistic based on your self-analysis your preparation and your confidence on yourself. In general spending 1 hour on week days & 2-3 hours during weekends/holidays is suggested for a normal & average CAT aspirant.
Note:
For candidates who are doing their graduation and also preparing for CAT & other MBA exams must remember that their graduation marks plays a major role in selection process. Not only that, it also plays a major role in their whole career as well. The advice to them is not to be complacent about their graduation studies due to the CAT preparation; graduation performance is something which reflects a candidate’s sincerity, dedication & hard work towards their career. A candidate spending 4 years without putting effort would not be considered as mature enough and would have to face lot of difficulties later. So please do your graduation with the same zeal with which you are aspiring for MBA.

the CAT has become much easier for non-engineers now than ever before.
ReplyDeleteNon-engineers were always given a 'push' in the CAT by a pattern of evaluation where the verbal score was added to their overall score (while the quant. score was added to the overall score in the case of engineers). Engineers as well as others invariably score much higher in the verbal section than in the quant. section.
In addition, the quant. paper has now been made less tough since very few non-engineers were able to score even the very lowly set cut-offs in that section !
And despite all these 'adjustments', engineers still constituted more than 80 % of the successful candidates at the CAT 2010 !
Very well said Rahul.... Being an engineer I have a strong belief that Engineers will continue to dominate in future as well!
Deletesir,
ReplyDeletei have just started preparation for CAT. i m in final year of b.tech nd my current cgpa is 7.1 . i have not set myself for iims but i have well defined aim to be in top 20 colleges. i do not have command on either section whether verbal or quant but i l put efforts for sure. so, i just want to ask that how many question should i aim for in both, verbal and quant.
Dear Amit,
DeleteThe number of question you should attempt to get through top 20 MBA colleges depends on the level of questions asked in paper. This means number of correct question attempted required to clear cut off will vary each year. To get through top 20 colleges your percentile should be 94+.
I will recommend you to join Mock tests that will give you idea where you stand.
Furthermore I would advise you to go through below post in detail it will answer most of your common queries and
would also help you in planning your preparation effectively:

Can i prepare for cat without any coaching
ReplyDeletei am the student of b.tech 1st year
Dear Manveer,
DeleteAs mentioned on the post above, whether coaching is required or not varies from person to person and it depends on each individuals current level of expertise across different sections. A person who is good in mathematics and has good command over english may not require coaching. To get an answer you could look into the marks which you have scored in 10th and 12th in these subjects, if you feel confident enough then you could easily manage without coaching. Though I will strongly recommend you to join for mock tests.
Feel free to ask any more questions.

With 95+ percentile you have very good chances of getting through top 25 colleges. Try to score as much as possible, rather set your target a bit higher (96-97+).

ReplyDeletei wanted to know that i am going to join nit silchar or patna this year after councelling.,i wish to start preparing for cat from very 1st year of college...........,and wish to go in TOP B SCHOOL just after college,so will "NO WORK EXPERIENCE" BECOME A HURDLE IN getting admission to iimS,xlri, mdi and other top B schools?................so
ReplyDeleteDear Anand,
DeleteWork experience is not the only criteria based on which top colleges give admissions to students. There are other factors too such as 10th, 12th , Graduation marks, etc. Furthermore all top colleges prefer to have a good mix of freshers and experienced students as this adds more diversity to the batch.
Hence I would advise you not to bother about work ex.
Please refer below page for IIMs selection criteria:

One advise to you: please do not take your graduation casually, try to score as much as possible and gain as much knowledge as possible.

what are my chances to prepare for cat and how i have to prepare
Dear Anonymous,
DeleteDue to low marks in academics you do not have much chances in getting through top 20 colleges. You should aim for colleges ranked above 20 and try to score 95+ in CAT. Beyond top 20 colleges you have decent chances.
Would advise you to read through the guidelines mentioned above. You must identify areas of improvements by analyzing yourself and then working hard to improve them.

what are the chances of getting into top colleges?
Hi,
ReplyDeleteyour tips seem to be really useful in preparing for CAT.
Few questions though, hope you can guide me here:
1. I am a top tier MBA college aspirant, IIM-A , FMS etc and would like to get nothing better.
2. I have work experience of just over a year with the IT industry.
3. Currently I have resigned from the firm and am spending the remaining time till CAT 2013 preparing all out for it.
I hope you can understand that I'm very serious about this and so at this juncture what would you advice as a study strategy?
I mean I know that I have certain luxuries such as time, so any comments from your side would be helpful.
Oh by the way I have a 92.2% in 10th, 86% in 12th and 7.2 GPA for my engineering...
Deletehi sir,
ReplyDeletei am aashu
sir iam working proffessional so didn't get much time to study
sir iam equally good in all the three sections
sir i have made my target to get atlest above 99.8% in coming three years..
sir how much hour i need to prepare daily????
Hi Sir,
ReplyDeleteI want to confirm that my 10th and 12th percentage are 60 and 62 and my graduation score is 65%, so would there be any problem regarding my selection in IIM's ...?
Regards
Dear Anonymous,
DeleteYes, due to low academics marks chances of you getting calls from IIMs is less. In case you below to reserved category then you may expect call from iims.

hello sir,
ReplyDeleteyour site helped me a lot to know much about CAT.Thanks for giving good guidelines for new CAT aspirants.
my 10th-91%
12th-90%
graduation-70%
and i have no work experience..
how much should i score in CAT exam to get calls from IIM's and will my graduation % effect my chances of getting placed in any of top IIM's... please reply....
Dear Anonymous,
DeleteYour graduation marks will impact your chances of getting call from IIMA. Your AR score is 18. To screen out candidates IIM A sets separate cutoff for CAT score and AR score. Last years AR score was close to 23, with that in mind chances of you getting call from IIM A are less.
Nevertheless you have good chances of getting calls from other IIMs if you score 99.6+ in CAT with consistent performance across sections.
Cheers!
All the best!
P.S: Do like and share this free blog with all your friends!
hello sir,
ReplyDeletethanks for the response.what do you mean by AR score.how to calculate it??
IIMA has formulated AR score for admissions into IIMA. Its calculated as:
DeleteAR Score = 10th Marks* 12th Marks * Grad. MArks + Masters + Work Exp
For you your AR Score = 3*3*2 = 18 which is bit behind IIM A cutoff of 24.
thank you sir..
Delete10th - 85%
ReplyDelete12th - 70%
current %in ug around 80%
now the question is wat sud be my %tile target in cat to get admission in iims...
and what about my 0 workx and 12th marks are they gonna affect my chances much ??
please do reply thanx....
Dear Anonymous,
DeleteYou need to have excellent acads and excellent CAT score to get through IIMs. To get admissions in IIMs you must score 99.5+ score in CAT with consistent score across sections, also 0 work should not matter. Though even 99.5+ percentile will not guarantee calls from all IIMs as most of the IIMs have set cut offs for academics as well.

Please let me know that would I be able to get Top 10 institutes if I prepare for 2013, aiming 97-98% in CAT 2013?
Dear Anonymous,
DeleteGetting through top 10 colleges is not so easy, to get through these colleges your academics needs to be really good and consistent throughout. Along with excellent acads your CAT score must be 99.5+ with consistent scores across sections.
Hence try to score 99.5+ in CAT to expect call from top colleges.

hey y dont u provide some guidelines to working professionals for CAT.
ReplyDeleteThanks
Sure, let me know if you have specific questions.
DeleteCheers!
Sir,
ReplyDeleteI have 4 yrs of job experience in chemical industry, holding B.Tech in chemical technology.
Please suggest me is it OK to do an MBA through CAT or should opt for executive MBA through GMAT?
Please reply soon so that i can start my preparation.
Dear Sandip,
DeleteBoth CAT and GMAT are renowned exams whose scores are accepted for admissions in MBA colleges. With GMAT you are eligible to apply to colleges outside India as well. Rather than focusing on CAT or GMAT I would advise you to brainstorm and identify whether you want to go for 1 year executive MBA or two years full time MBA. Many working professional opt for executive MBA and many of them get sponsored from their current organization. Whereas with full time MBA f you join top colleges you have very good chance of getting a good placement. So in short if you want to do MBA to get placed in a big company with high package then you should go for full time MBA.
Also what matters more than CART or GMAT is which college you are joining. Both GMAT and CAT have top colleges of India under them.

Hello, i am good at verbal skills but i lack in maths. i don't know how to start preparing exactly for the CAT exams. if you can help me exactly from where to begin it would be very kindful of you. :) thank you
ReplyDeleteHi Ekta,
ReplyDeleteThere are no easy shortcuts for improving maths. The most important thing which would help you in getting better at Maths is practice.
You must start from basics, keep yourself motivated and do not get disheartened.
You can see the list of Quant topics at below link:
Common topics in Quantitative Ability
Furthermore, you must make your preparation a bit interesting by maintaining a record of your scores. Just take example of mastering any Arithmetic Problem from a particular topic (like Speed, Time & Distance) below is the way to go:
1. Pick a recommended Quantitative Aptitude book brush up on the basics of the topic you want to improve on. (say Speed, Time & Distance)
2. Allot fixed time around 30 minutes and then you should attempt 10-15 solved examples without looking into the answers
3. Check your answers and calculate your score (3 marks for right answers & -1 for each wrong attempt).
4. Review carefully all the questions which you were not able to solve or you have answered incorrectly and find out:
a. What went wrong and
b. What you need to learn so that you do not make the same mistake again
5. After review is done, reattempt all the questions which you were not able to solve without looking into the solution
6. If you are still unable to solve them re-review and try to spend more time in understanding the concept.
7. In case of doubts over concepts you can take help from someone who is good at that topic.
8. Once comfortable with solved examples, attempt 25-30 randomly selected unsolved examples from the book within 45-50 minutes.
9. Again check your answers and calculate your score (3 marks for right answers & -1 for each wrong attempt)
10. Review carefully all the questions which you were not able to solve or you have answered incorrectly and find out:
a. what went wrong and
b. what you need to learn so that you do not make the same mistake again
11. After review is done, reattempt all the questions which you were not able to solve without looking into the solution
12. Repeat the steps 1-11 for next maths topic which you want to improve.
Within one to two days you would be easily able to master on one topic of maths. This really works and after a month of effort you could see significant improvements in your mathematical ability.
You must maintain a daily record book of scores for each topic for both solved and unsolved examples you have attempted. Also take a note of the questions which you are unable to solve or you are always solving it incorrectly along with the right approach to solve it. This will help you in revising the concepts and improving on your weak area.
Please do share your feedback if you find this helpful.
