Most of the IIMs today have multiple criteria for shortlisting candidates for MBA programs. Apart from CAT score they also focus on past academics and work exp.

What about freshers (those do not have any kind of work experience)? Will they get admission in any IIMs or not?
ReplyDeleteDear Anonymous
DeleteCAT score has 70% weightage and only 30% weightage is for other things(10,12th, grads marks work exp. etc).
Furthermore all IIMs prefer to have a good mix of freshers and experienced candidates as this adds more diversity to the batch. In simple words if you are fresher then there is no need to bother.

sir, i have 82% marks in 10 n expecting above 80% in graduation,,,but i just have 52% in 12,,,to what extent will it affect my chances of getting into iims or lets say top 15 colleges, if i score the required marks in cat,,
ReplyDeleteDear Kishore,
DeleteIt would not matter much, the only thing you need to know is when your profile is evaluated you would not get good score for 12th Marks whereas your 10th and Grad marks are good and should compensate for 12th Marks.
Furthermore your CAT score matters the most in getting IIM calls, hence you should try to score as much as possible, 99+ and consistent score in all sections as well.
Though during your interview you would be required to justify why there was a sharp dip in 12th marks and I believe you would be prepared for that.

thanks a lot sir..now i would be able to prepare for my cat xams more confidently.
DeleteGlad to know that...give your best...All the best!
Deletesir,i have just started my preparation for cat 13..but there is a huge amount of confusion in my mind over the 'percentile calculation'..
ReplyDelete1.can you please give a detailed information on how the percentiles are calculated, sectionwise as well as overall..
2.i am aiming for 99+ percentile, so what according to you is the number of questions that i should do correctly in the cat exams out of the maximum 60??
Dear Kishore,
DeletePercentile is basically relative score, where do you stand when compared with other students. If out of 100 marks if you have scored 38 which is highest i.e. no one else has scored more than you than your percentage would be 38 but your percentile would be 100.
Number of questions which you should answer correctly depends on would depend on level of toughness of particular paper. For instance, CAT exam for a particular year may be tougher and people with low scores & good accuracy could easily manage to get good percentile. At the same time when questions asked are simpler, low scores and high accuracy would not fetch high percentile.
The unique thing about exams like CAT is its unpredictability. One needs to make decision on fly during exam and is expected to be prepared for unexpected.
In short you should try to answer as many questions as possible with high accuracy. This would require lot of practice, would advise you to keep yourself focused and motivated. I would recommend you to go through below useful posts as well:

Dear Use tips,
DeleteBelow are some of the ways to improve your verbal skills:
1. Reading a good newspaper, preferably ,The Economic Times regularly. (Read it looudly)
2. Referring to a good dictionary ,preferably, The Oxford Advanced Learner Dictionary regularly.
3. Watching good news channels likes BBC, Al Zazeera, NDTV, DD News, CNBC etc regularly
4. Reading good news magazines like The Economist , Newsweek , Businessweek etc regulary
5. Reading good books regularly
Furthermore, the other thing which you may try is make your preparation a bit more intresting.
Just take example of reading The Hindu:
-you can try to read a big article exactly for 10 mins (with the help of stopwatch)
-Remember or mark the line till which you have read in those 10 mins
-Close the newspaper & write down all you have understood in those 10 mins
-Re-read the complete article and see whether your summary matches with the actual content of the article
-Keep a count of number of words you have read in 10 mins
-Maintain a daily record book and try to improve it gradually
When you will observe that your reading abilities are improving, it will boost your confidence and your communication skills.

ReplyDeletei scored 68% in my 10th and 56% in my 12th. i am a 2nd year b.com student and scored 65% in my 1st year. i wish to crack cat exam but my previous percentages would create a hindrance for me even if i work hard from now on to clear my cat after graduation. what can i do sir to improve my profile from now on. will any complementary courses like niit will help me? kindly help sir.. as i dont want to leave any stone unturned from now on.. :(
Dear Anonymous,
DeleteFirst and most important thing which you must do is to score as much as possible in your graduation, this will help you in getting admission to a decent college and not only that graduation marks play a vital role through out once life.
Beyond this you could try to score as much as possible in CAT, aim for 99+. Looking at your 12th marks you may not get calls from top 5 IIMs but there are lot of other good colleges where you could easily get through with a higher percentile and good interview.
To make your profile better you could try to gain some work exp. after your graduation(2-3 years) and then go for MBA.

THANK YOU SIR
Deletecan i make it to the top 7 mba colleges like xlri if i score 75% and above in my graduation and wit my this 10th and 12th marks?
Dear Anonymous,
DeleteFor IIMs your 10th and 12th marks matters a lot an d chances of you getting calls from top IIMs is very less. Though XLRI has not explicitly called out anything about 10th and 12th marks cutoff but they have mentioned following:
"While preparing the short-listed candidates for the interview, in addition to XAT performance, we may factor in academic ability and the relevant work experience. Besides performance in the personal interviews (and/or group discussions) we also consider XAT performance, relevant work experience, academic ability, extra curricular activities etc. while preparing the final list."
With all this in mind its very difficult for you to get calls from IIM/XLRI.
Would advise you to look beyond these colleges and try to get through other colleges in top 20 list.
All the best!

Dear Saurav,
DeleteYou may get top IIMs calls(IIMA) on scoring 98+ based on the OBC reservation. Try to score as much as possible in CAT as your AR score comprising of 10th, 12th, graduation marks, masters and work exp is 12 and is bit low.

sir,
ReplyDeletehow much we need to score to obtain 95+ percentile
Dear Anonymous,
DeleteThis depends on the level of questions asked in CAT exam each year and ability of aspirants to answer those question. With a relatively simpler paper people with score of 350 may not get 95 percentile whereas when paper is complex even with 180 score candidates could get 98+ percentile.

Hey, I have a question, last year what was the lowest AR cutoff for IIM-A i am making a 20 due to my CGPA being 7.8, what was the general trend last year...i have heard it is 21....and if so what kind of %tile would be needed to offset the loss due to a low AR
ReplyDeleteAR Cutoff for IIMA for 2012 admissions was 27+ and percentile cutoff was 99.xx. Unfortunately one has to clear both cut offs to get call from IIMA.

Dear Shashank,
DeleteYour AR score (based on your marks) is very low due to which you may not get calls from these colleges even if you score very high in CAT. You have good chances of getting calls from other IIMs if you score 99+ and have consistent score in each individual section as well.

if i score 90% in my bachelor degree nxt 2 years than there is any chance bcoz i have just completed my first year!!!!if not than in which college i can get selected???????
Deletewhat is the minimum AR for top three IIMs and what i can do so that i am able to get selected after 99+
Deleteas per application rating if i score more than 21 than i get chance in IIM ahmedabad
DeleteDear Shashank,
DeleteWould request you to take out time and go through the IIM-A selection criteria which is shared above.
In brief application score is computed as below:
Application Rating Score: (AxBxC)+D+E
A=Derived from 10th Marks
B=Derived from 12th Marks
C=Derived from Graduation Marks
D=Derived from Graduation marks
E=Work Ex.
For you A=1, B=2, C=3(assuming 80+ in grads), D=0 and E=0
Your AR Score is = 6
With your 10th Score its not possible to reach to AR score of 21.
If you score 99+ in CAT with consistent score in each section you have good chance of getting through non IIMs and IIMs other than top 3 IIMS. With 99+ score in CAT you would surely get call from colleges ranked between 10 to 20.
All The Best!
respected person
Deletei know that i would not get selected in top 3 IIMs.but my aim is to get selected in top 5 or 10 B-schools of india.so should i go for job after BBA to get more marks........my selected colleges are these so please help me to get selected in any of these !!!!!
1. (IIM Ahmedabad) Indian Institute of Management – Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad
2. (IIM Calcutta) Indian Institute of Management – Calcutta, Kolkata
3. (IIM Bangalore) Indian Institute of Management – Bangalore, Bangalore
4. (ISB Hyderabad) Indian School of Business, Hyderabad
5. (XLRI Jamshedpur) Xavier’s Labour Relations Institute, Jamshedpur
6. (IIM Lucknow) Indian Institute of Management – Lucknow, Lucknow
7. (FMS Delhi) Faculty of Management Studies – University of Delhi, Delhi
8. (IIM Indore) Indian Institute of Management – Indore, Indore
9. (IIM Kozhikode) Indian Institute of Management – Kozhikode, Kozhikode
10. (SPJIMR Mumbai) SP Jain Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai
Dear Shashank,
DeleteMerely work exp. will not ensure you getting through almost all of the colleges mentioned above by you. Say take example of IIM A, considering 3 + years of work exp. will just add 3 more marks to your AR score and it will become 9.
Similarly IIM Kozhikode gives 20% weight age to 10th Marks. Would advise you to focus on next to 10 colleges and try to score as much as possible in CAT.
All the best!
can i get the admission fms, delhi on my all the scorings???
Deletethanx for your help!!!!!!!!
except top 3 iims in which iim i will get the admission????there is any scope for me in xlri, isb, fms & iift delhi?????
DeleteDear Shashank,
DeleteI would try to elaborate more talking about individual colleges :
ISB: Prefers candidates with Work Exp.
XLRI, FMS & IIFT: If you score high in CAT/XAT your 10th marks should not hinder your chances.
Try to focus on colleges ranked between 10-25 as well.
All the best!
For other IIMs I would advise you to go through the individual links which I have updated today for each of the IIM.
DeleteGood Luck!
i have checked aal the IIMs shortlisting criteria.but i m confused in which i would be selected in CAT13.
DeleteIT MY REQUEST TO YOU THAT U PLEASE FOR ME CHECK THAT ON MY MARKS IN WHICH IIM I LL GET SELECTED.IT WOULD BE REALLY HELPFUL.THAN I CAN CONCENTRATE ON MY STUDIES TO MAKE NY ELIGIBLE FOR THE IIMs
THANKING YOU
SHASHANK SHARMA
is there any chance for me in IIM lucknow, indore!!!!!!
DeleteTHANKING YOU
SHASHANK SHARMA
Dear Shashank,
DeleteWith 49% in 10th there is hardly any chance for top 10 IIMs. As per the criteria specified in past years even newer IIMs such as IIM Trichy had 70+ % percentage in 10th as cutoff for general candidates (I am assuming you below to General category).
You may get calls from last 3 IIMs: IIM Udaipur, IIM Raipur and IIM Kashipur.
Would advise you not to be obsessed with IIMs and look for other colleges in top 20 list.
All the best!
Though XLRI has not explicitly called out anything about 10th and 12th marks cutoff but they have mentioned following:
Delete"While preparing the short-listed candidates for the interview, in addition to XAT performance, we may factor in academic ability and the relevant work experience. Besides performance in the personal interviews (and/or group discussions) we also consider XAT performance, relevant work experience, academic ability, extra curricular activities etc. while preparing the final list."
With all this in mind its very difficult for you to get calls from Top IIMs/XLRI.
Would advise you to look forward to other colleges in top 20 list.
All the best!
as i have seen comments according to this no one can easily get into IIMs.

HOW DO YOU CALCULATE THAT 21 THING.. PLEASE TELL US
ReplyDelete21 thing is calculated as per below formula:
DeleteApplication Rating Score: (AxBxC)+D+E
A=Derived from 10th Marks
B=Derived from 12th Marks
C=Derived from Graduation Marks
D=Derived from Graduation marks
E=Work Ex.
For example : Consider a candidate with 2+ years of work and having 80+ marks in 10th, 80+ marks in 12th and 70+ in graduation. His AR score would be:
A=3, B=3, C=2, D=0 and E=3
AR Score is = (3*3*2) + 0 + 3 = 21

WHAT ABOUT IBS... IS 10TH 12TH SEEN THERE ALSO
ReplyDeleteDear Anonymous,
DeleteDid you means ISB? The ISB prefers applicants with full time work experience (preferably of two years).
Below is details on ISB related with academics:
"The programme is rigorous, and since its one year duration makes it even more challenging. Therefore the evaluation keenly considers the student’s academic performance. However there is no cut-off score. Likewise, we also assess analytical ability based on GMAT. Here again, we do not have a cut-off GMAT score. While a good GMAT score helps, an average score can be compensated for by achievements in other areas."
All the best!
Hello ...
ReplyDeleteI am doing B.tech..And now in third year...
my percentages are as below:
10th:92
12th:85
grad. till today:73
What should be my percentiles in CAT13 to get into IIM A,B or C?
Dear Anonymous,
DeleteIf you manage to get 80+ in grads then you would be 100% assured from AR score respective to get calls from IIM A, B and C. As of now your AR score is 18 which is good, but it doesn't gives 100% surety for calls from IIM A, B and C, this means you may or may not get call from these 3 colleges.
Furthermore along with academic performance other factors such achievements, extracurricular activities, and post-degree, work experience are also taken into consideration. If you have any significant extracurricular activity to showcase then you have very good chances. Also work exp. of 2+ year will increase your AR score by 3 points.
Aim to score high in CAT. Having good academics doesn't give you discount in terms of Percentile, you need to do well in both the areas. CAT percentile to get through IIM A and C should be 99+ with consistent score in all sections. IIM B gives calls at lower percentile but you need to have very good profile having things such as:
-Significant Achievements
-Work Exp.

Hello buddy,
ReplyDeleteMy one of the friends have decent scores in 10th and 12th(greater than 80),but in graduation he got one backlog and cleared it...Would it vanish his dreams to get into IIM-A...
If his percentage in grads(80+) is good backlog should not matter. With 80+ in grads he would be more sure in terms of clearing the AR score from IIMA. If his percentage is less than 80, he should try to get 2+ years of work exp. to make his profile better, this would aid him in getting through IIMA.

DeleteWith low marks in 10th its very difficult to get through top 3 IIMs and even if you go for work exp. it will not be sufficient to cover your 10th Marks. Your AR score basd on 10th, 12th and grads marks is just 6.
About fms,xlri,isb:
ISB: Prefers candidates with Work Exp.
XLRI, FMS : If you score high in CAT/XAT your 10th marks should not hinder your chances.
Try to focus on colleges ranked between 10-25 as well.
To know where you stand for other IIMs I would advise you to go through the individual links for each IIM which I have updated today.

thanx for your info!!!
Deletei have heard from TIME that u might not get the call but u will be shortlisted for futher process if i score 99+
i have also heard that the short listing criteria changes every year!!!!as i have seen IIMA AR for 2011-13 was 21> and i was getting 24 on my graduation and 12 th marks!!so does it changes?????
DeleteDear Anonymous,
DeleteIIMs have started considering past academics from past few years. The reason why you might have seen them changing the criteria every year is they want to make the selection criteria more better and sensible. In future it is expected that there might not be too many changes in it.
In short answer is yes if you compare selection criteria used by IIMs in terms of past academics for last 3 years, there has been changes in the way they consider the academic performances and cutoff as well.

About "i have heard from TIME that u might not get the call but u will be shortlisted for futher process if i score 99+"
DeleteI am not sure what do they mean by further process. But scoring 99+ is always better :), that way you are well placed and sure to get into to 15 college.
All the best!
they says(TIME)you will not get any call from top 3 IIMs but u will be shortlisted for PI and GD.scoring more than 99+or u will get chance in IIM ahmedabad.bcoz for 1 seat there are 4 candidates and all students doesnt score 100% cile.so u will be selected for furthur process if crosses 99%+
Deletecile
bcoz the says this year topper also not good in academics but called for further process.i dont know they are lying or telling the truth
DeleteAs per admission criteria defined by IIM A , it considers academics performance along with CAT score for shortlisting candidates for FD/PI:
Delete"70% weightage is given to the CAT/GMAT score and 30% weightage is given to the Application Rating Score."
Read at:
http://howtoprepare4cat.blogspot.in/2011/11/iima-shortlisting-criteria-2012-14-iima.html
as u have said top 15 colleges.but their are not good enough for placement and there overseas placements are worst.i m just joining iims for placement bcoz top 3 placement are best others i have checked they are near to xlri, fms,SIBM.so what should i do u recommend should i go for job and than join iims or go for forgein studies!!!!!!!
Deletegive me all details of ISB
DeleteDear Anonymous,
DeleteGoing for GMAT may be better for you, reason being even if you get work exp. that will not guarantee you 100% surety of entry into top 3 IIMs.
Also would advise you to look at the list of top colleges at below link, I believe colleges in top 20 are not that bad:
=> top B Schools in India 2012

Few things about ISB:
Delete-Selection is through GMAT score.
-Students with work exp. are preferred:
"A minimum of two years' full-time post qualification work experience is preferred"

ReplyDeleteDear Anonymous,
DeleteI am not too sure if CA is considered as master degree while computing AR score. Based on marks till graduation your AR score is 12, with this AR score its very difficult to get calls from top IIMs.

ReplyDeleteDear Anonymous,
DeleteIf you score 99.5+(consistent in all sections) you have chances of getting calls from lower IIMs. With low marks in academics its almost impossible to get calls from top IIMs.

inter 93.6
But due to my severe health problem during btech i hv failed in achieving my desired %..It is
Btech 66..
So I dont want to get settled in life with that % and so I want to go for MBA..
What score did I need in cat to get throughh..
Dear Suseela,
DeleteYour academics marks are not bad , your AR score is 18. With this AR score you may not get calls from top 3 IIMs, you should not have problems in getting calls from other top colleges. You should AIM to score 97+ in CAT to get calls from top 20 colleges. The higher you score the better calls you will get from top 20 ranked colleges.

respected sir,
ReplyDeleteMy acads are as follows:-
10th:-75.8%
12th:- 75.7%
b-tech:-8.5 CGPA
i m from nc-obc category.
My query is according to the shortlisting criteria by iim calcutta the points awarded for 10th and 12th marks are as:-
MARKS POINTS
81% and above 5
76% to 80% 4
71% to 75% 3
66% to 70% 2
60% to 65% 1
Less than or equal to 59% 0.
i m having 75.8% and 75.7% in 10th and 12th respectively so according to the above criteria how many points will i get is it 3 or 4?
Dear Sumit,
DeleteIt should be 4, as per IIM C selection criteria:
"The marks obtained by candidates will be rounded to the nearest integers"
Hence nearest integer for 75.8 and 75.7 is 76 which means you will get 4 points.

So is this a good profile For IIM A ,B or C?PLZZ REPLY!
Dear Shuvma,
DeleteFirst thing would like to tell you is unpredictability exists and you should not be disheartened by it. Accept it as part of life, buddy. Do your best from your side so that you can reduce the amount of uncertainty from your end.
Your profile is very good, except your grads marks. I believe you still have time to improve the graduation percentage. Try to score 60+ percentage in graduation and then your chances are bright.

sir,i am 3rd year physics (H) student preparing for cat.My acad is 10-92%,12th -83%,graduation-75%.since i am not prepared for cat 2012 and will be appearing in 2013, will the gap year be a hindrance in getting a call from iims ???i already have a gap year after my 12th as i was preparing for medical entrance. if yes what should i do to utilise the year???
ReplyDeleteI would advise you to attempt CAT 2012 to get a feel of the exam. Secondly would suggest you to get work exp. in the one year gap so that it will add value to your profile.
Deletethank you.Sir, as per my academics do i hold any chances of getting into iims ?Secondly, as there arent much good job oppurtunities after graduation in physics what kind of work experience would be good for me ??
Deletesir,
ReplyDeleteright now i am in bba 2nd yr,,,n till now my AR is coming out to be 12,,,can i get calls from iim-a,c,b,,,,if not,,,which other iims i can aim for?? Or any other gud b schhol,,,i want one of the top 15 coolleges,,!!! Is there any chance???
Thnk u,,!!
Dear Kishore,
DeleteAR Score is only for IIM A, looking at your low aR score I could say you don't have a chance to get through IIM A,B and C. Would advise you to go through admission criteria link for each IIM. If you do well in CAT you could get calls from last 3 IIMs (Udaipur, Kashipur, Raipur) and colleges like IMT Ghaziabad.
All the best!
sir but i am a nc-obc,,,and if ar is only for a,,then why cant i get admission into b or c,,,if i get a gud percentile in cat,,!! Thnx,,!!
DeleteDear Kishore,
DeleteYes as you belong to NC-OBC its possible to get Call from top IIMs if you score well in CAT.
Al the best!
thnx a lot sir,,!!!
DeleteAnd sir what about xlri, xibm, fms, imt,sp jain,,,does these b-schools also consider the academic scores for shotlisting or they just see the xat n cat marks respectively??? Thnx,,!
As per their admission processes, FMS & IMT doesn't focus on academics. XIMB focuses on for final selection and seems the extent to which it focuses on past academics is relatively less. Rest all colleges focus on academics.
DeleteAll the best!
so according to u,,,which colleges should i focus on,,,obviously in top 15-20,,,keeping in mind my following marks,,
Delete10th- 82%
12th- 52%
grad- 81%
and i am an nc-obc,,,!!!
Can i expect to get a call from the iims too,,,if yes then which iims and what is the minimum percentile that i should score for it??
Hope you will give answer to my every question clearly,,,!!!
Thnx a lot,,!!!
i haven't got answer to my question yet,,,!!!
DeletePlease reply soon,,!!!
Thnx,,!!
Dear Kishore,
DeleteBased on the reservation you may get calls from lower IIMs. With reservation its very difficult to predict anything.
I have said this so many times that your academics and CAT score are two different evaluation criteria based on which you get IIM calls and having good marks in academics doesn't means that you would not require good percentile to get IIM calls. For general candidates percentile for top IIMs is 99+ for OBC it might be 98+.
Instead of focusing more on such things would advise you to rather focus on CAT preparation. Academics results are past and cannot be changed CAT score is future, if you fail to score 97+ then it would be very difficult for you to get admission in to 20 colleges.
All the best!
sir dis is d most imp n probably the longest ques i have ever asked to anyone,,,n i will decide my future on ur answer,,!!
DeleteI knw cat percentile is d most imp criterion for getting into the iims or any other college,,,!!!
Bt as i told u i just have 52% in 12th,,,82% in 10 n expecting above 80% in graduation,,,!!!
So to compensate for my 12th class percentage,,should i go for work exp. before appearing for cat or it would not matter much,,,i wanna get into one of the iims,,,older ones,,,or any of d other top 15 colleges,,and i am in no hurry,,i can invest two years of my life now to gain work exp if it would improve my chances,,,bcoz sir i dnt wanna regret my decision after 7-10 years that i could have waited for 2 years n it could have helped me to get a better college n a better life,,,!!!
So sir wat should i do,,,please tell me in detail,,will dis worth it in the end,,!!!
Thnx,,!!!
Dear Kishore,
DeleteYes if you can easily get job without dropping a year then its ideal for you to gain some experience before joining MBA as it will add more value to your profile and would also help in developing your overall personality. 2.5 Years of work exp. is ideal and is given the most weight age by all IIMs.
All the best!
thnx a lot,,,!!
DeleteSir,
ReplyDeletei M A non-engineer and my grad percentage 57.3% till now!(till 4 th semester)
and Equivalent CGPA is 6.2
so in cat registration form i have to write 57.3 or
(6.2/10)*100=62%
plz do reply as i m very confused about That!
As per CAT's eligibility criteria:
Delete"The percentage of marks obtained by the candidate in the bachelor’s degree would be calculated based on the practice followed by the university/institution from where the candidate has obtained the degree. In case the candidates are awarded grades/CGPA instead of marks, the conversion of grades/CGPA to percentage of marks would be based on the procedure certified by the university/ institution from where they have obtained the bachelor’s degree. In case the university/ institution does not have any scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by dividing the candidate’s CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the result with 100. "
In short this will depend on "the procedure certified by the university/ institution from where you are doing graduation how do they consider CGPA and whether you need to use percentage as along with CGPA they are also giving percentage.
In case you still have doubts try reaching to CAT Candidate Care Support:
"The Integrated Voice Response System (IVRS) will be available 24x7 starting from 30 July 2012 on 1-800-102-2256."

ReplyDelete12th-71%
grad-57.49%(b.tech)
work exp- 8 months
what r my chances.
Dear Ishan,
DeleteYour profile doesn't seem clear the cutoffs of top 3 IIMs. IIM C doesn't focuses on graduation marks for GD/PI call with more work exp. and high CAT score you could hope for a call from there. Work Ex. of 8 months is almost insignificant in terms of score awarded by IIM C. Work Exp of 31-35 months would add more value as you will get maximum score for Work Exp.(IIM C only).
IIM Indore gives 20% weightage to graduation marks. Hence chances are less.
IIM K and IIM L give 10% weightage to graduation marks. You may got call from IIM K and IIM L if you score high in CAT and have more than one year exp.

Hi.
ReplyDeleteBelow mentioned is my academic profile.
10th - 55.5% (UP State Board)
12th - 67.2% (UP State Board)
Grad - 60% (National Institute of Fashion Technology)
Work Ex - 38 monthes as of now
I belong to the NC-OBC category.
What percentile of marks in CAT and XAT would guarantee me a place in top 10 colleges? I expect to score above 95 percentile going by the recent AIMCATS..
This is kinda Urgent!!!
DeleteDear Shashank,
Delete95+ should ensure IIM calls in OBC, though with categories at times its hard to predict as it lot depends on other candidates writing exam and opting seat from a particular category.

Yes, I would surely share your free blog. Nice initiative.!!
DeleteBy the way, did you look at my 10th and 12th percentages? They are too low. Wouldn't that affect at any stage?
Reservation and UP Boards should help. Most of IIMs adjust 10th/12th marks based on board. I believe toppers in UP board don't get as high marks as CVBSE/ICSE board, if that is the case your relative marks in 10th and 12 would be higher. Keeping all these calculation aside, would advise you to focus on scoring as much as possible in CAT as that is the thing which you can change control rest all is past.

no i mean the reason i will be doing mba is to get away from doing any software work
DeleteI will assume you have good marks in engineering. If you get call from top colleges they will ask you questions such as:
Delete1. Why you want to do MBA?
2. Don't you think you are wasting knowledge which you have gained during 4 years of engineering etc
You would have to justify the same with proper reasoning, I hate software work will not help. If you give this as a reason the next question would be why you have opted for engineering and haven't you wasted 4 years and so much of money, the engineering seat which you took would have gone to some one who is genuinely interested in engineering and you have taken away an opportunity from some other worthy candidate.
In simple word you would be required to justify for going for MBA after engineering. Beyond that you should not face any problem if you score well in CAT and your academics are good.
All the best!

-chandru
Dear Chandru,
DeleteIrrespective of 10th, 12th and graduation marks all top IIMs selects candidates with high percentile such as 99+.
Even if your academics marks are 80+ throughout the expected cut off in CAT to get call from top IIMs is 99+.
(IIMB gives call on 95+ percentile but it gives heavy weightage to candidates profile and work exp.
With low marks in grads you have very very less chances of getting through top IIMs. You surely have chances to get call from colleges ranked in top 20, please refer below page to check top ranked colleges:
=> List of Top MBA Colleges of India : Rankings 2012

Get ready for CAT 2012
The colleges which you have mentioned (xlri, fms, isb,SIBM) select candidates based on different exams and CAT cut off is not applicable to them. SIBM considers SNAP test score, XLRI conducts XAT, selection in ISB happens based on GMAT score whereas FMS considers CAT score. All these colleges are among top ranked colleges in India. You need to score very high in all these exams to get admissions to these colleges(You need to be among top 200 students in XAT, SNAP for XLRI & SIBM and top 500 in CAT for FMS).

ReplyDeleteDear Anonymous,
DeleteTo get calls from top IIMs you need to have good academics as well as high score in CAT. Having good academics but low CAT score or vice-versa will not be sufficient. Your M.Com marks may be helpful to some extent. You definitely have chances to get into top 20 colleges in India if you score high in CAT/XAT. Furthermore your diverse knowledge would surely help you in interview and Group discussion.

ReplyDeletemyself vikas my 10th marks 76% and 12th 81% b.tech 63%
no work exp what percentile should come in cat to get into iims (general catgorie)
Dear Vikas,
DeleteCAT Score and Academics percentage are two independent criteria's used by IIMs for selecting candidates. Having good marsk doesn't mean that person will get call on lower percentile.
Most of the IIMs in general give calls on 99+ percentile with consistent score across all sections. IIM B gives calls on lower percentiles as it gives more weightage to candidates profile.

ReplyDeleteDear Anonymous,
DeleteEveryone doesn't require coaching for cracking CAT, at the same time lot of people crack CAT with the help of coaching institute. To know whether you need coaching or not you should analyze yourself first. Refer guidelines at below page to know whether you require coaching or not:
Preparation Guidelines for CAT aspirants
TIME and IMS are 2 of the good coaching institutes for CAT preparation.

Sir I finished my B-tech in 2012 and now i am preparing for cat exam. My graduation cgpa is-5.72(Amrita school of engineering) and i don't have any work experience.
ReplyDelete1.Can I get any IIM calls if i score above 90 percentile in cat?
2.How many questions approximately should i attend correctly in order to get more than 95 percentile in cat.
Dear Chardu,
DeleteEven with 99+ percentile IIM Call is not guaranteed as IIMs also looks into your academics performance. Though in general people who manage to get calls from most of the IIMs have 99+ percentile.
a. Thus with merely 90+ percentile a person almost has no chance of getting IIM call.
b. Percentile is relative marking and number of question which one needs to attempt to get 95+ percentile will depend on:
-Level & complexity of questions asked
-Ability of other candidates to perform better than you.
Say for instance, in a particular year out of 180 marks after scoring just 75 marks a person could get 99+ percentile if the CAT question paper is tough whereas in case of simpler paper a person may not get even 90 percentile after scoring 120 marks out of 180.
Percentile is relative marking indicating how you have performed when compared to others and it cannot be pre-defined based on numbers of questions you are going to attempt.
Would advise you to score as much as possible in CAT so that you get good percentile and try to get through top 20 colleges.
All the best!
Sir, My Academic performance is low, As you said now I know i cannot get any IIM calls. Can you suggest me any other Best MBA colleges in south India and the required percentile for that colleges. And i am aiming BIM trichy too, so How much percentile should i score in cat to get that.
DeleteDear Chandru,
DeleteRefer below links for finding the college based on percentile and rank:
CAT 2012 Cut-off percentile for MBA colleges
List of top B Schools in India 2012
For BIM Trichy you need to score 90+ if you are a general candidate. Though would advise you to score 96+ so as to have lot of options open and get into better college.
All the best!
sir,
ReplyDeletewith AR=12 is there a chance of getting calls from iim's with 90+ percentile
Dear Anirudh,
DeleteEven with AR=25 and 90+ percentile there is very less chances of calls from IIMs. Top IIMs give calls on 99+ percentile and along with that a candidate must also have really good academics(AR Score 22+). CAT score and Academic marks both are 2 different evaluation critera used by IIMs for shortlisting candidates, which means having good acads doesn't mean that one will get calls from top IIMs at lower percentile.
In short you need to score 99+ to get calls from lower IIMs.
All the best!
i have completed my first year of b.com and i am willing for cat13.so what is the correct tym for coaching classes to be taken for me!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDear Anonymous,
DeleteRather than coaching I will talk about CAT preparation. Firstly you need to plan your preparation by analyzing yourself well. CAT 2013 is not far away just 14 months left and you should start with all your preparation and planning right away. For Guidelines for CAT Preparation planning please go through below page":

Dear Anonymous,

ReplyDeletemy query is i have 64% in 12th and 74% in 10th i have 4+yrs of work ex, if i get 99+ile in CAT do i stand any chance for iim c ,L,k,i,XLRI or would you advise me for ISB through GMAT.
And shall i aim for top 20 colleges , would they provide me better edge after 4 yrs of exp.
any response will be appreciated.
Dear Yash,
DeleteIf value of xx in 99.xx percentile is high(read 99.5+) then you have chance of getting calls from IIM C & L.
For other IIMs you may get call on 99+ percentile.
With 4 year of work exp. my advise to you would be to only focus on top 15 colleges from below list:
List of top B Schools in India 2012
ISB is also a worth trying option for you.

ReplyDeleteDear Anonymous,

All the best!
Sir my 10th-89%
ReplyDelete12th-72% and
i finished my B-tech, my cgpa is 5.72 and i have no work experience. I am a general category student. I have seen all the iims criteria that it requires atleast 60% in graduation. suggest me which are the top colleges i should look for according to my academic performance.
Dear Anonymous,
DeleteIf you score high in CAT 99.5+ you may manage to get calls from some of the lower IIMs.
Below are some of the other colleges from where you could expect calls if you score 98+ in CAT:
11. (IIFT Delhi & Kolkata) Indian Institute of Foreign Trade – Delhi & Kolkata, Delhi
12. (JBIMS Mumbai) Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai
13. (MDI Gurgaon) Management Development Institute, Gurgaon
15. (SJMSoM IIT Bombay) Shailesh J Mehta School of Management – IIT Bombay, Mumbai
16. (SIBM Pune) Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune
17. (NMIMS Mumbai) Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai
18. (DMS IIT Delhi) Department of Management Studies – IIT Delhi, Delhi
19. (IMT Ghaziabad) Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad
20. (XIM Bhubhaneswar) Xavier’s Inastitute of Management, Bhubhaneswar
All the best!
How would CAT score help in getting a call from IIFT, SIBM and XIMB? Please Explain.
DeleteDear Anonymous,
DeleteTo get calls from IIFT, SIBM and XIMB you need to give IIFT, SNAP and XAT exam, apologies if you got confused. The relative percentile/score which you need to score in these exams (IIFT, SNAP & XAT) to get calls from these colleges needs to be high(as high as 98+ in CAT which means you need to be in top 2-3% of candidates in these exams as well).
CAT Score would help in getting calls from other colleges but not for these for 3.
Sir, kindly suggest me the top colleges other than iim which don't expect work experience much?
ReplyDeletebecause i have none. Is great lakes institute expecting work ex?
Dear Chandru,
DeleteBefore answering your question I would like to make one thing clear: Your perception that only candidates with work exp. are selected in IIMa is not true. In fact all IIMs prefer to have a good mix of freshers and candidates with work experience and so do other colleges. The only difference is the criteria for IIM is bit high when compared with other colleges(Cuttoff percentile & academic marks cutoffs is high for IIMs ).
Coming back to your question even Great Lakes provides some weightage to Work Exp., again which doesn't mean that freshers will not get through Great lakes. Below are the details mentioned by Great Lakes for selecting candidates:
"Applicants are evaluated based on GMAT/CAT*/XAT*/MAT/CMAT scores, past academic performance, essays and letters of recommendation, work experience and performance in the interview and group discussions. "
Below are other colleges apart from IIMs which you can look forwards to:
(IIFT Delhi & Kolkata) Indian Institute of Foreign Trade – Delhi & Kolkata, Delhi
(JBIMS Mumbai) Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai
(MDI Gurgaon) Management Development Institute, Gurgaon
(NITIE Mumbai) National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai
(SJMSoM IIT Bombay) Shailesh J Mehta School of Management – IIT Bombay, Mumbai
(SIBM Pune) Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune
(NMIMS Mumbai) Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai
(DMS IIT Delhi) Department of Management Studies – IIT Delhi, Delhi
(IMT Ghaziabad) Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad
(XIM Bhubhaneswar) Xavier’s Institute of Management, Bhubhaneswar
(MICA Ahmedabad) Mudra Institute of Communication, Ahmedabad
(TISS Mumbai) Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai
(SCMHRD Pune) Symbiosis Center for Management and Human Resources Development, Pune
(VGSoM IIT Kharagpur) Vinod Gupta School of Management – IIT Kharagpur, Kharagpur
(IIT Kanpur MBA) Industrial and Management Engineering – IIT Kanpur, Kanpur
(TAPMI Manipal) TA Pai Management Institute, Manipal
(SIMSR Mumbai) KJ Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research, Mumbai
(IMI Delhi) International Management Institute, Delhi
Note:
The colleges are arranged in order of ranking.
Some of these colleges do not accept CAT score. Examples: IIFT, SIBM, XIMB etc.
All the best!
Thanks for your information. It is really helpful.
